Freshwater Shrimps

Macrobrachium spp

These freshwater shrimps are known to exceed 100mm carapace length. This specimen was photographed by Chris in October 2001 and it's from the Murray River. It's the second set of legs that are larger and clawed. In summer they can be a pest to swimmers because they nip you if you stand still.

These shrimps have commercial aquaculture potential.
