Spiny crayfish, Euastacus armatus

'Murray Crayfish',

Euastacus armatus

This is probably the best known spiny crayfish. Many people fish for these crays every year. Occasionaly a specimen over 2 kilograms is caught, that's a big cray. They are found in the Murray Darling system and are usually caught in the winter months. Crays in mountainous areas can often be caught up until Christmas. This particular cray (photograph) was caught at Waranga Basin.
