Spiny crayfish, Euastacus yarraensis

 'Yarra Crayfish',

Euastacus yarraensis

This is a beautiful crayfish comeing in a variety of colours. This one is from the Yarra River system. Here they are vivid blue with white claws. Bob Hall of Native Fish Australia has one on display at the Eco-Centre at the Bundoora Children's Farm. This is a small crayfish and they don't reach legal fishing size. Remember all crayfish with the exception of yabbies are protected by legal lenghts. Legal lengths also applies to burrowing land yabbies

 'Otway Crayfish',

Euastacus yarraensis

No not a misprint, this crayfish and the one above are the same species. The variation in colour is significant. This also occurs in cherax and engaeus species.
